How can young people actively shape their future? What issues matter most to their generation, and how can they work together to make a difference? These were some of the questions explored by young people from Finland, Germany, Italy and Slovenia during the international youth exchange “A.C.T.”. From 11 to 17 October 2026, they came together in Kokkola, Finland, including 11 members of the Youth Advisory Board of the European Youth Education Centre Magdeburg (EJBM).

For one week, we talked about democracy, youth participation and ways to create positive change in local communities. At the same time, the exchange offered plenty of opportunities to make new friends and discover different cultures.

Young voices for a shared future

What issues matter most to young people across Europe? Through various workshops and discussions, participants explored the challenges facing their generation. Key topics included climate change, mental health, discrimination, equal opportunities, economic security and peace.

Through roleplays, debates and collaborative project work, the young people explored different perspectives and developed their own ideas for possible solutions. One thing became particularly clear: young people do not just want to be informed about social and political developments. They want to actively participate in decision-making processes.

An important part of the week was therefore exchanging experiences on how youth participation works in different countries and exploring the opportunities young people have to make their voices heard.

International encounters that bring people together

Beyond the workshops, it was above all the personal connections that made the week so special. Through shared activities, intercultural evenings and excursions into Finnish nature, participants got to know each other better and learned more about everyday life and cultures in the other countries.

At the end of the exchange, many young people reflected on how much their new friendships meant to them. They also had the opportunity to improve their English skills, gain confidence and experience how enriching it can be to connect with people from different countries.

For many, one of the most meaningful aspects was feeling accepted for who they are within the international group. Some participants even described the week as one of the most meaningful experiences of their lives.

New Inspiration for Youth Participation in Magdeburg

The week in Finland once again highlighted how important it is to give young people the space to express their opinions and take responsibility. After all, they do not just want to experience the future as it unfolds. They want to actively shape it.

Our Youth Advisory Board members returned to Magdeburg with fresh perspectives and valuable memories. We look forward to bringing the ideas and inspiration from Finland into the future work of the EJBM!

A big thank you to the Villa Elba team, all partner organisations involved and, of course, the dedicated young people who made this exchange such a special experience!
